An instant favourite. I picked this up at a bookstore that sold "mystery books". You'd pick one up just based on the small synopsis they put on the package. Definitely a good marketing strategy because I asbolutely had to take one despite the fact that I did not need more books at the time (but we always need more books, don't we :)?)

A very compelling science fiction/science fantasy story with an interesting writing style i quickly fell in love with. We follow three women at different stages in their life as they navigate this world - the Stillness, a land tormented by frequent earthquakes and natural disasters. Orogenes, individuals with strong powers that can use the energy in their environment to manipulate the earth, are feared and persecuted by the rest of the population, and controlled through an institution seeking to use their gifts for the greater good.

This book balances personal and planet-scale tragedies beautifully, and manages to be sad, thoughtful, funny and witty all at the same time.
